issue ten : the icons & iconoclasts

Who doesn’t love a good bronzer? When used correctly and, in moderation – say it with me, ladies and gentlemen… M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N – a little bronzing action can really go a long way to add a little life back into the skin. Especially as the sun has begun it’s annual pilgrimage into hibernation up here in the northern hemisphere. Despite popular belief, (and I am basing this on the overzealous use of bronzer that I am accosted with on a daily basis walking around the streets of London) bronzer requires a light touch and was designed to effortlessly illuminate the skin where the sun naturally touches it, not turn ourselves into bronze statues of bygone centuries! A good bronzer is both an iconic and essential piece of any makeup collection – whether you’re a full-face-of-makeup kinda person, or even, more of a product minimalist. Cream bronzers are a great hack to achieving a flawless finish, as powders can quickly become heavy-handed, badly blended and leave at the mercy of meme-makers (becoming a meme does not make you an iconic beauty. Just sayin’!)

This bronzing stick was nominated by the one and only Tahira Herold as one of her kit icons for its duality and adaptability. Tahira is one of the five founding members of Conscious Beauty Union, so she really knows her onions…err, I mean bronzers.

Bronzer is an essential part of my toolkit because I tend to use it sculpt the face (please do not read contour here). The Ilia Sway is a perfect shade to add warmth to cheeks and the top of the nose as bronzer, but can easily be used under the cheekbones for soft shading.

This golden-hued creamy bronzer suits most skin tones and is perfect for a delicate sunkissed look, year-round. Ethically-sourced mica and minerals are suspended in a formulation of wholesome, nourishing certified organic waxes and butter’s making it easy to apply (thanks to its handy stick applicator) and even easy to blend in seamlessly. That is, after all, the objective here. Admittedly, the packaging is not the easiest to recycle because of its various multi-material components. However, the metal components are made from recycled aluminium, so if you are able to pull the case apart and extract the plastic, the metal is fully recyclable. Their boxes are made from post-consumer recycled paper printed with vegetable-based dyes.

As always, only purchase new when you finished what you already have…and I am going to guess we all have a few too many bronzers lurking in our bathroom cabinets, bureau drawers and makeup bags.

Have you tried any untainted bronzers you feel are iconic? We would love to hear about them. Leave your comments below!

This colour doubles as a great cream eyeshadow too. Use alone or under a powder shadow for extra hold.
