Product Review : Zao Refillable Liquid Liner

issue seven : folklore & fairytales

Once Upon A Time...

There was a makeup artist named Khandiz. She longed for a vivid blue eyeliner to create the looks she saw in her mind's eye because she believed that blue was the most perfect colour in the universe. It encompassed all the contradictions of life.

But Khandiz only used a special kind of makeup to make on all the people she came across look their most captivating. The makeup she used contained only the very best ingredients, lovingly gathered from Mother Nature. She believed that no creature, great or small, should suffer in order for the princes and princesses, kings and queens, demons and cohorts to look more beautiful so her quest was an arduous one.

After many moons had passed, she finally found the land of Zao. The Magician there had made the most electric shade of blue liquid liner and it dried to a vivid matte colour. It was perfect! Khandiz was so happy as she was finally able to create her masterpiece inspired by the folklores of distant lands. However, as she read through the list of magic ingredients that made up this potion, she came across an ingredient that she had heard dangerous tales about. She asked the Magician how his eyeliner - renowned for only the purest, safest ingredients in all the land - could contain the terrifying propylene glycol?

Because the Magician was a good, honest man, he explained to her that his propylene glycol - while almost exactly the same as the terrifying one she had heard about it fairytales made from synthetic ingredients, was actually of vegetable origin and came from responsibly sourced palm oil, certified by the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil and its capabilities were essential if the liner was to work the way his customers expected it too. Khandiz left the Magician satisfied that only the very best ingredients were used to make this magic paint and was grateful that she could ask the Magician of Zao about his product and he would come back to her with a satisfying and informed answer.

Fairytales aside, this eyeliner is truly an extraordinary formulation that delivers the most incredibly vivid colour and is a must for any makeup artist or adventurous makeup wearer to add to their arsenal. I do have to say that when I tried it out on the back of my hand, and really layered it up, it did start to crack and flake off a bit, however, when applied to my lovely muse for the purpose intended, it stayed on beautifully.

I also love that the bamboo casing is refillable - and if you have read any articles from issue six, you will know this is a big drawcard for me - not to mention that I really appreciate the transparency behind the Zao brand, which is crucial to the values of  UNTAINTED
