issue ten: the icons & iconoclasts

There are really only a few items in a makeup artist’s kit that we share with the stereotypical artists of old. While not dismissing the “art form” itself (because good makeup truly is an art form in and of itself – of this I am certain!), aside from brushes, it’s only the humble pencil that resembles a traditional artist’s tool. Let’s consider a pencil for a moment, in the context of issue ten. Since the dawn of civilisation, this unassuming instrument has allowed us to capture ideas, to improve on them thanks to the impermanence – and ultimately mark out our history. As a makeup medium, pencils (be that eye or lip) provide makeup artists with a unique tool to add to our arsenal – whether we choose to conform to their intention and merely define a specific facial feature, or to break the rules of “beauty” and use it with their purest intention…as a mark-maker.

Benecos Natural Kajal Eyeliner Pencils

In the world of untainted beauty alternatives, few compare to Benecos’s Natural Kajal Eyeliners (so much so, we are reviewing them again!). These 9 iconoclastic mark-makers are adored by many a conscious beauty aficionado for their vibrant colour selection, colour payoff and longevity (considering they are free from the questionable ingredients that fill their conventional counterparts, namely; paraffin, parabens, silicons, synthetic colour, synthetic preservatives and synthetic fragrances). While you might be surprised by the actual number of natural cosmetic pencils available on the market, I find most of them to be too prescriptive in their use. By that, I mean most of them are shimmery, which is great if you simply want to define an eye…but I am not that kind of makeup artist. I am partial to a bit of rule-breaking in my work, and these beauties, with the bold, matte finishes, allow me to do just that. They allow me to colour outside the lines, so to speak.

My fellow Conscious Beauty Union member, long-time contributor and green beauty makeup icon in her own right, Lou Dartford, also felt that these pencils were worthy of an iconoclastic accolade, and concurred on the same points.

I love them because the colours are nice and bright and non-shimmery, which is great as so many natural brands can have a lot of shimmer. The colour payoff is great and lasts well. I also love the really accessible price point. They are staples in my kit.

On Impact

So while we have discussed the efficacy of this product in our previous review, I felt it worth delving a little deeper into the things that make these pencils worthy of being featured on Untainted Magazine. As Lou mentioned, one big drawcard of these pencils is the price point. Their affordability makes them accessible to a wider audience and allows everyone an opportunity to have access to better cosmetics (for us, animals and the planet). They are also vegan certified, which I know is important to many of our readers, and certified by BDIH.

What this certification means is that the product’s raw materials have to be of plant origin and must originate from certified organic raw material. As well as this, the ingredients and final product must uphold cruelty-free obligations and be free from:

– Organic-synthetic dyes
– Synthetic fragrances
– Ethoxylated raw materials
– Silicones
– Paraffin and other petroleum-derived products

You can read the full certification criteria here.

While I would have liked to see more information regarding the wood that the pencils are made from and some more transparency regarding how they source their mica on the Benecos website, I do trust in Benecos and its parent company Pravera and their assertion that these factors are as carefully considered as the ingredients they choose to use (or not to use) in their formulation. The very name, Benecos, means good cosmetics (from the Latin, “bene”, meaning good) so their business and reputation are built on it.

Let’s hope they bring out more colours in the not too distant future.

Tips

Play. Draw news lines. Colour outside of them.
