Product Review : Avasol Surf Barrier Stick

issue two : from the water's depth

So the whole "is sun good or bad for you?" debate has been raging for quite sometime. It all boils down to a healthy balance, as with everything in life! Unhindered sunshine on our skins is imperative for our bodies to produce vit D, which in turn is vital for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. Too much sun causes ageing and has been linked to skin cancer. The thing is, most sunscreens are just as harmful to our bodies because they contain toxic synthetic ingredients that negatively effect our health and wellbeing too.

So what's the answer?

Well, you've heard it a thousand times before, but I will say it again for good measure. Don't go out in the sun between 11am - 3pm (or an hour either side of that if you live in the Southern Hemisphere where the Ozone hole is bigger) without an SPF. Before those times, make sure you get 10 - 20 mins of unprotected sun exposure.

Want a little more information on all of this? I recommend you head over to EWG's article on 8 Little-known Facts About Sunscreen for more in depth detail. The also have an excellent guide to the best and worst sunscreens on the market... in case you're curious.

Avasol appears to be an excellent brand, fulfilling all our untainted requirements! (I say appears, because I have yet to actually try it... with me being in the UK... and it being stateside.) Instead, I have taken an excerpt from Kimi Werner's review from her Instagram feed - as that is how I came to learn about this product. If you haven't seen our exclusive editorial with Kimi, or read our interview with her, don't forget to when you finish reading this review!

I lovethe fact that Avasol comes in three colours (and there are two other products in the line). So while it might not disappear into the skin, clown face is not your only option!

I use mineral sunscreens a lot in my work, but not the way you would expect. The fact is that unless your mineral sunscreens has nano-particles, they are going to sit on the surface of your skin, and leave you with a pasty finish. This makes them an excellent product to use as a white base to mix coloured minerals into for wild and interesting textures. (There will be numerous examples of this over time.)

Kimi's review

"I've been using @loveavasol sunscreen for a several years now ever since being introduced to it while afloat the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a sailboat in Tahiti with @captainlizclark. Along with the abundance of waves, dive sessions and coconuts, we were also getting SO much sun constantly and my commercial sunblocks could not keep up with the heat. Liz offered me some of her all natural avasol and I loved it immediately because along with keeping me from getting burnt, it just felt so good for my skin. I sought out this product ever since because I had never before used a sunblock that my skin actually seemed to crave. Later in the years that followed, I started to learn about the damage that chemical sunblocks do to our reefs, the unhealthy affects of nanoparticles in sunscreens that rub on clear, and the smog that is in our oceans due to micro-plastic pollution. This education really made me love this product even more because of how brilliantly thoughtful it is. Along with being all natural (and edible really) it's biodegradable packaging takes it to another level of mindfulness."
